UNIVERSITY OF URBINO AND URBANIA ITALIAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE CENTRE. PROGRAM OVERVIEW

PURPOSE                     

The Council on Overseas Language Education  COOLED  Academic Sessions  in Italy are designed to accommodate students at all Italian proficiency levels.  If you have no or very limited knowledge of Italian, you will have an intensive opportunity to learn the language in a period of  four, eight and twelve  weeks of full immersion. If you already have a good grasp of the Italian language and you apply yourself diligently, we expect that you will be able to increase your proficiency to near native levels.  The core of the program is a variety of language courses, conducted in Italy, that should allow you to fulfill your academic and personal objectives.  

PROGRAM SERVICES

The Council on Overseas Language Education program will provide the following services to you:

  • Italian language instruction at the Italian Language and Culture Center, Italy;    
  • Telephone conferences, e-mail communications, and regular mailings to prepare you for a successful experience in Urbino, Italy;     
  • Meeting you at a designated airport in Bologna,  Italy  the day program begins;
  • Transporting you to the family home   where you will be staying while attending classes;
  • Emergency telephone number to call, 24 hours a day, any day of the week.

CLASSES

You will attend classes Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM, 

COLLEGE CREDITS  

You will be able to earn three, six or twelve college  credits  according3tot he length of the program you choose granted by the State University of New York (SUNY) International Education Center at Broome College. These credits are fully transferable and are accepted by most colleges and universities in the United States and abroad. (Before participating in this program, however, you should check with your college administration to confirm that any credits you earn will be transferable and satisfy your college’s criteria.) A transcript showing the courses and grades you earned will be mailed to  you after you have completed the program by the  collaborating U.S. college. Official transcripts may be sent to your school upon your written request.

INCLUDED

The following are the items included in the cost of the program:

  • Round trip airfare from  several  international airports in the USA to Bologna and back to the airport of origin in the USA ;
  • Meeting you at the designated airport in Bologna , Italy  the day  the program begins;
  • Transfer to and from the airport in  Bologna  to the family home  where you will stay while attending classes at the Studio Vacanze Itineranti;
  • Room accommodations, two persons in a room, and two meals a day (breakfast and dinner) at the  family home  where you will stay while attending classes;
  • Tuition;
  • Services provided by the Council on Overseas Language Education  staff in Urbania, Italy ;
  • Limited health insurance. Covers the cost of  medical attention, hospitalization and  prescriptions you may require during the length of the program.

NOT INCLUDED

Some important items that are not included in the cost of the program:

  • Ground transportation in the U.S. or in Italy with the exception of transportation to and from the airport in Italy to your place of residence and during tours as per itinerary.
  • Lunch
  • Books.
  • Personal expenses, for example:
  • Cost and effort of obtaining a passport, visa or any other travel documentation;
  • Telephone calls;
  • Any other expenses not specifically included in this document. 

AIR TRAVEL

Round trip airfare from the USA  to Bologna and back to the airport of origin in the USA is  included in the price of the program.

BEGINNING AND END OF PROGRAMS

All programs begin at the indicated day of departure from the USA  and end at the indicated day of arrival in  the USA.  

FINANCIAL AID

You may be eligible for financial aid that could help you to participate in this program.  We recommend that you see a financial aid officer at your college if you are interested in pursuing this possibility.

STUDENT VISAS
 
If you are not an American citizen or select a program longer than 12 weeks, you will need to call the Italian Consulate to find out whether you need a visa to participate in the program.

DEPARTURE DATES

Departure and return dates have not been confirmed and are subject to change.  Those dates will be confirmed sixty days prior to your departure.

SCHOLARSHIP
If you are accepted to participate in any of the sessions you will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

$4,000 AWARDS
If If you attend a twelve week session, at the conclusion of the session, you will be considered for a $4,000 award from the Cipolla Foundation.

INTERNSHIP
At the conclusion of the twelve week program you will also be considered for an internship in a business or government office in the Pesaro/Urbino area..

What kind of assistance and supervision is provided?

Assistance

COOLED  personnel will be available for the duration of each program.  They are responsible for making sure that all of the services included in the program are provided to the participants.  They are also available to assist in routine and emergency matters that may confront participants.

 

COURSE  DESCRIPTIONS  

FOUNDATIONS OF ITALIAN I (3 cr. 45 hrs.)
An intensive introductory language course. Classroom instruction is combined with laboratory instruction. Communication in the language will be emphasized. For students without previous experience in the language.

FOUNDATIONS OF ITALIAN II (3 cr. 45 hrs.)

An intensive course for students who took Foundation I or who had one year of high school language. Classroom instruction is combined with laboratory instruction. Comprehension, speaking, reading and writing skills will be emphasized and cultural materials introduced.


INTERMEDIATE ITALIAN I (3 cr. 45 hrs.)

A course taught entirely in the language to promote speaking fluency and writing competence through participation in discussion on different topics. Intensive grammar review and the learning of more advanced grammar. Prerequisite: Foundations I and II or equivalent.


INTERMEDIATE ITALIAN II (3 cr. 45 hrs.)

A continuation of Intermediate I with emphasis in written composition, oral expression and cultural readings from literary works periodicals and newspapers of the language. Prerequisite: Intermediate I or equivalent.

ITALIAN CONVERSATION (3 cr. 45 hrs.)

A course designed to develop and maintain fluency in small conversation groups through problem solving discussions ranging from the banal to the serious: being stranded on a desert island and surviving with fellow standees town planning, and other problems of our modern technological society.


ADVANCED ITALIAN CONVERSATION AND COMPOSITION (3 cr. 45 hrs.)

Taught in the language this course is designed for the student who has achieved competency in the basic elements of grammar and wishes to advance to a more sophisticated mastery of the 
written language. Grammar review is tailored to the needs of individual students. Selected short text analysis and extensive practice in composition are assigned.


ITALIAN RENAISSANCE STUDIES (3 cr. 45 hrs.)

The aim of this course is to introduce the student to the principal authors of two main periods of thought in Italian cultural history: the end of the Middle Ages, as well as the Renaissance which was announced and in part shaped by the principal thinkers of the Middle Ages such as Francesco Petrarca (d. 1374) and Giovanni Boccaccio (d.1375).
Passages from two major Medieval and two major Renaissance writers will be studied in this course. These literary readings will however be informed and reinforced not only by critical readings but also by passages discussing the philosophical contributions by leading Renaissance Humanists.
