PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
This twenty-two days program consists of fourteen days of intensive Italian language study for high school students. It is based in Frontino, near
Urbino the birthplace of the painter Raffaello, tucked away in the hills near the Adriatic coast, provides an ideal location for summer study due to its climate and landscape. You will be given a placement test the first day of classes to let you know whether the course you selected is appropriate for your level of proficiency. Classes take place Monday through Friday from
8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. On two or three occasions classes will take place in the afternoon, in order to accommodate activities that are available only in the morning. You will also attend afternoon activities consisting of visits to parks, museums, places of recreation, historical sites, stores and monuments Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and, evening seminars consisting of discussion and analysis of the Italian language classes, afternoon activities, tours and excursions and their cultural significance. There will also be weekend tours to nearby cities.
STAFF
A full time Director, foreign and U.S. faculty
and supervisory personnel will be in residence for the duration of the program.
They will be providing supervision, instruction, counseling and all other
necessary services, as well as accompanying students in all program-sponsored
activities. The Director will meet the students at the designated New York
airport, travel with them to Frontino and return with them to New York at the
conclusion of the program
COLLEGE
CREDITS
Up to three credits granted by the State
University of New York (SUNY) International Education Center at Broome C.
College may be earned by each student
attending the summer session. A grade evaluation of the
students performance will be made by the faculty at the end of the session.
These credits are fully transferable and are accepted by most colleges and
universities in the United States and abroad. However, students are advised to
discuss them with their academic advisors and seek school approval before
registering in the summer session abroad.
PROGRAM
ACTIVITIES & TRAVEL
The program includes excursions to Urbino, Cartoceto, Rimini,
Florence, San Marino, Gradara, Pennabilli, Siena, San Leo, Urbania, Rome and the
beautiful Adriatic Sea beaches.
INCLUDED
Round trip air transportation from New York and
several other international airports in the USA to Milan or Bologna and back to the airport
of origin in the USA. Transfers to and from Milan to Centro Studi Rocca Dei Malatesta. Room accommodations in double rooms). Three meals a day consisting of breakfast, lunch and dinner. Tuition (three college credits).
NOT INCLUDED
Personal expenses, passport, visa, transportation to and from the designated airport in the USA. Any other expenses not specifically included in this document.
CURFEW
You are required to be in your room no later than 11:00 p.m. A room
check will be conducted at 11:00 p.m. The Director reserves the right to enter
your room to check if you are present after 11:00 p.m.
TELEPHONE CALLS
You may not receive telephone calls between 11:00 pm and 7:00 am
(Italian time). In case of an emergency, relatives and guardians of the
participants must contact the Director
during those hours.
DEPARTURE & RETURN DATES
Departure and return dates have not been confirmed and are subject to
change. Those dates will be
confirmed on May 1, 2007 .
You must travel with the program from the designated New York airport to the
location of the program abroad.

SCHOLARSHIP
Once your application is received and reviewed by the scholarship committee you
will be informed about the status of your application. It usually takes between
three and ten working days for the review to be completed and the notification
to be mailed to you.

What kind of assistance and supervision is provided?
ASSISTANCE
COOL ED
personnel will be available for the duration of each program. They are
responsible for making sure that all of the services included in the program are
provided to the participants. They are also available to assist in routine
and emergency matters that may confront participants.
SUPERVISION
Participants in our high school programs
are subject to a set of strict ground rules that apply to areas such as
attendance at mandatory activities, behavior in the dormitories, curfews,
consumption of alcoholic beverages, use of illegal drugs, and visitors.
Participants and their legal guardians must agree to these ground rules in
writing before being accepted into the program.
COOL ED
staff members monitor compliance with the ground rules to the extent reasonably
possible. Any participant who violates one of the ground rules may be
dismissed from the program at the sole discretion of the Resident Director.
Participants who are dismissed from the program are returned to the United
States as soon as possible at their own expense.
COURSE
DESCRIPTIONS
FOUNDATIONS OF ITALIAN I
Forty five hours of instruction and three college credits. An intensive introductory language course. Classroom instruction is combined with laboratory instruction. Communication in the language will be emphasized. For students without previous experience in the language.
FOUNDATIONS OF ITALIAN II
Forty five hours of instruction and three college credits. An intensive course for students who took Foundation I or who had one year of high school language. Classroom instruction is combined with laboratory instruction. Comprehension, speaking, reading and writing skills will be emphasized and cultural materials introduced.
INTERMEDIATE ITALIAN I
Forty five hours of instruction and three college credits. A course taught entirely in the language to promote speaking fluency and writing competence through participation in discussion on different topics. Intensive grammar review and the learning of more advanced grammar. Prerequisite: Foundations I and II or equivalent.
INTERMEDIATE ITALIAN II
Forty five hours of instruction and three college credits. A continuation of Intermediate I with emphasis in written composition, oral expression and cultural readings from literary works periodicals and newspapers of the language. Prerequisite: Intermediate I or equivalent.
ITALIAN CONVERSATION
Forty five hours of instruction and three college credits. A course designed to develop and maintain fluency in small conversation groups through problem solving discussions ranging from the banal to the serious: being stranded on a desert island and
surviving with fellow standees town planning, and other problems of our modern technological society.
ADVANCED ITALIAN CONVERSATION AND COMPOSITION
Forty five hours of instruction and three college credits. Taught in the language this course is designed for the student who has achieved competency in the basic elements of grammar and wishes to advance to a more sophisticated mastery of the written language. Grammar review is tailored to the needs of individual students. Selected short text analysis and extensive practice in composition are assigned.
