COLLEGE PROGRAM OVERVIEW

PURPOSE 
The Council on Overseas Language Education   COOLED  Summer Program in Argentina is designed to accommodate students at all Spanish proficiency levels.  If you have no or very limited knowledge of Spanish, you will have an intensive opportunity to learn the language in a period of four  to forty weeks  of full immersion. If you already have a good grasp of the Spanish language and you apply yourself diligently, we expect that you will be able to increase your proficiency to near native levels.  The core of the program is a variety of language courses that should allow you to fulfill your academic and personal objectives 

PROGRAM SERVICES
The Council on Overseas Language Education program will provide the following services to you:

  • Spanish language instruction at the International House;
  • Telephone conferences, e-mail communications, and regular mailings to prepare you for a successful experience in Argentina;
  • Meeting you at a designated airport in  Buenos Aires the day the program  begins;
  • Transporting you to your place of residence;
  • Emergency telephone number to call, 24 hours a day, any day of the week;

CLASSES
You will attend classes Monday through Friday, for the duration of the program.

 

COLLEGE CREDITS  
You will be able to earn from three to thirty  college credits depending on the length of the program you choose. These credits are fully transferable and are accepted by most colleges and universities in the United States and abroad. (Before registering in this program, however, you should check with your college administration to confirm that any credits and work experience you earn will be transferable and satisfy your college’s criteria.) A transcript showing the courses and grades you earned will be mailed to you after you have completed the program by the collaborating U.S. college. Official transcripts may be sent to your school upon your written request.

INCLUDED
The following are the items included in the cost of the program:

  • Round trip airfare from Los Angeles, New York and several other international airports in the USA to Buenos Aires and back to the airport of origin in the USA;
  • Meeting you at the designated airport in Argentina the day the program begins;
  • Transfer to and from the airport in Buenos Aires to  a family home or college residence, where you will stay while attending classes;
  • Room accommodations, two persons in a room, two meals a day (breakfast and dinner), at your place of residence;
  • Tuition and books;
  • Services provided by the Council on Overseas Language Education staff in Buenos Aires, Argentina;
  • Sightseeing and excursions as per itinerary.
  • Limited health insurance. Covers the cost of medical attention you may require during the length of the program

NOT INCLUDED
Some important items that are not included in the cost of the program:

  • Ground transportation in the U.S. or in Argentina with the exception of transportation to and from the airport in Buenos Aires to your place of residence and during the two tours described above;
  • Lunch;
  • Personal expenses such as cost and expense of obtaining a passport, visa or other travel documentation, telephone calls.
  • Any other expenses not specifically included in this document.

AIR TRAVEL
Round trip airfare from Los Angeles,  New York and several other international airports in the USA to  Buenos Aires and back to the airport of origin in the USA is included in the price of the program.

BEGINNING AND END OF PROGRAMS
All programs begin at the indicated day of departure from the USA  and end at the indicated day of arrival in the USA.
 


SCHOLARSHIP 

Once your application is received and reviewed by the scholarship committee you will be informed about the status of your application. It usually takes between three and ten working days for the review to be completed and the notification to be mailed to you.


FINANCIAL AID
You may be eligible for financial aid that could help you to participate in this program.  We recommend that you see a financial aid officer at your college if you are interested in pursuing this possibility.
 

STUDENT VISAS  
If you are not an American citizen, or you choose a program longer than 12 weeks  you will need to call the Argentine Consulate to find out whether you need a visa to participate in the program.

Departure and return dates have not been confirmed and are subject to change.  Those dates will be confirmed sixty days prior to your departure.

What kind of assistance and supervision is provided?

Assistance
COOLED  personnel will be available for the duration of each program.  They are responsible for making sure that all of the services included in the program are provided to the participants.  They are also available to assist in routine and emergency matters that may confront participants.  

COURSE  DESCRIPTIONS    

ELEMENTARY SPANISH I AND II (LEVELS ONE AND TWO).
Beginner’s vocabulary and grammar.  Forty five hours of instruction and three college credits each. These courses introduce the student with no prior knowledge of Spanish to the basic grammar structure of the language through oral and written drills and exercises.

INTERMEDIATE SPANISH I AND II (LEVELS THREE AND FOUR).
Intermediate grammar and drill.  Forty five hours of instruction and three college credits each. These courses are designed to develop strong communication skills.  It begins with a rapid review of the basic grammatical structures already studied by the students in the level one and two courses..  This brief review is followed by more advanced structures needed to acquire better proficiency.  Classroom activities progress from drills to exercises of a more communicative approach.

ADVANCED SPANISH I AND II (LEVELS FIVE AND SIX).
Reading, composition and conversation.  Forty five hours of instruction and three college credits each. These courses focus on reading and writing skills.  Students read essays and articles written by contemporary authors, prepare discussions around it and finally submit a written analysis.  Students are expected to write and revise a series of compositions designed to improve their structural knowledge of the language at the third year level.

 

LATIN AMERICA  CULTURE AND CIVILIZATION. (LEVEL SEVEN). Taught in Spanish.
Forty five hours of instruction and three college credits.  This course studies the ethnic, philosophical, political, literary and artistic development of the Latin American countries with special emphasis on the country being visited, its people and culture and is taught in Spanish and/or English.
