THREE AND SIX WEEKS SUMMER COLLEGE PROGRAM OVERVIEW

PROGRAM LOCATION
The program is based in Urbino, the birthplace of the painter Raffaello. Urbino, tucked away in the hills near the Adriatic coast, provides an ideal location for summer study due to its climate, landscape and the superb setting of Renaissance City.

STAFF
A full time Director, foreign and U.S. faculty and supervisory personnel will be in residence for the duration of the program. They will be providing supervision, instruction, counseling and all other necessary services, as well as accompanying participants in all program-sponsored activities. 

CLASSES
Students will attend classes Monday through Friday. There will be several modes of instruction ranging from lectures to group discussions and activities in which all participate. The interest, initiative and imagination of each student will play a major role in determining the best ways on implementing the curriculum.

COLLEGE CREDITS
Up to six credits may be earned by each participant in the summer session. A grade evaluation of the student’s performance will be made by the faculty at the end of the session. These credits are fully transferable and are accepted by most colleges and universities in the United States and abroad. However, students are advised to discuss them with their academic advisors and seek college approval before registering in the summer session abroad.

PROGRAM ACTIVITIES & TRAVEL
There will be lectures and discussions with academicians and other professionals on poetry, art, politics and the economy issues, which are part of today’s realities in Italy. The program includes trips to the opera in Macerata and tours to San Leo, San Man Marino, Gradara, Perugia, Assisi, Florence and Venice. Check itinerary for dates of these tours.

INCLUDED
Round trip air transportation from Los Angeles,  New York and several other international airports in the USA  to Milan and back to the airport of origin in the USA. Transfers to the University and airport abroad. Room accommodations in college dormitories (single rooms). Two meals a day consisting of lunch and dinner at dining facilities. Tuition (three to six college credits). 

NOT INCLUDED 
Personal expenses, passport, visa, transportation to and from the designated airport in the USA. Any other expenses not specifically included in this document.

SCHOLARSHIP 
Once your application is received and reviewed by the scholarship committee you will be informed about the status of your application. It usually takes between three and ten working days for the review to be completed and the notification to be mailed to you.

DEPARTURE & RETURN DATES
Departure and return dates have not been confirmed and are subject to change. Those dates will be confirmed on May 1, 2007. Students must travel with the program from the designated New York airport to the location of the program abroad.

Departure: June 28, 2007
Return: July 19, 2007 or August 9, 2007

What kind of assistance and supervision is provided?

Assistance
COOLED  personnel will be available for the duration of each program.  They are responsible for making sure that all of the services included in the program are provided to the participants.  They are also available to assist in routine and emergency matters that may confront participants. 

COURSE  DESCRIPTIONS  

FOUNDATIONS OF ITALIAN I (3 cr. 45 hrs.)
An intensive introductory language course. Classroom instruction is combined with laboratory instruction. Communication in the language will be emphasized. For students without previous experience in the language.

FOUNDATIONS OF ITALIAN II (3 cr. 45 hrs.)
An intensive course for students who took Foundation I or who had one year of high school language. Classroom instruction is combined with laboratory instruction. Comprehension, speaking, reading and writing skills will be emphasized and cultural materials introduced.

INTERMEDIATE ITALIAN I (3 cr. 45 hrs.)
A course taught entirely in the language to promote speaking fluency and writing competence through participation in discussion on different topics. Intensive grammar review and the learning of more advanced grammar. Prerequisite: Foundations I and II or equivalent.

INTERMEDIATE ITALIAN II (3 cr. 45 hrs.)
A continuation of Intermediate I with emphasis in written composition, oral expression and cultural readings from literary works periodicals and newspapers of the language. Prerequisite: Intermediate I or equivalent.

ITALIAN CONVERSATION (3 cr. 45 hrs.)
A course designed to develop and maintain fluency in small conversation groups through problem solving discussions ranging from the banal to the serious: being stranded on a desert island and surviving with fellow standees town planning, and other problems of our modern technological society.

ADVANCED ITALIAN CONVERSATION AND COMPOSITION (3 cr. 45 hrs.)
Taught in the language this course is designed for the student who has achieved competency in the basic elements of grammar and wishes to advance to a more sophisticated mastery of the 
written language. Grammar review is tailored to the needs of individual students. Selected short text analysis and extensive practice in composition are assigned.

ITALIAN RENAISSANCE STUDIES (3 cr. 45 hrs.)
The aim of this course is to introduce the student to the principal authors of two main periods of thought in Italian cultural history: the end of the Middle Ages, as well as the Renaissance which was announced and in part shaped by the principal thinkers of the Middle Ages such as Francesco Petrarca (d. 1374) and Giovanni Boccaccio (d.1375).
Passages from two major Medieval and two major Renaissance writers will be studied in this course. These literary readings will however be informed and reinforced not only by critical readings but also by passages discussing the philosophical contributions by leading Renaissance Humanists.
